and you should know about it too!

As far back as 90AD, Pedanius Dioscorides, the infamous Ancient Greek physician & pharmacologist cited Lanolin in his encyclopedias of incredible medical ingredients. That’s over 1500 years ago.

One hundred years later Lanolin became the pillar of our modern world of cosmetics when the chemist Isaac Lifshutz used it to develop the world’s first true skin cream now called Nivea. Today Lanolin is still used in many pharmaceutical creams, baby creams, eye creams and lipsticks due to is gentle nature and deeply hydrating qualities.

In 1935 Twort & Twort proved that Lanolin actually accelerates the repair of the skin, is a wonderful counter-irritant and boosts the skins protection from hazards in the environment.

In 1953 M B Sulzberger at the Skin & Cancer Unit at New York Hospital University found that out of 1,048 patients tested, 99% were not allergic to lanolin. Which makes it one of the safest ingredients to put on your skin.

Lanolin comes from beautiful soft fluffy sheep’s wool after sheep have been shorn in the summer months. It is extracted from the sheep’s fleece and is what sheep naturally produce to protect their fleece and skin from the harsh winter months or hot summers. A substance that sheep have developed and perfected over thousands of years of evolution.

In its raw form Lanolin is a smelly substance and rather like water needs to be purified before bottling. So this is what we do. This involves several washing steps of the raw wool grease and molecular distillation. The degree of purification from environmental pollutants determines the type of lanolin. In our ‘Original Nipple Balm’ we use the highest grade of lanolin, i.e. the Rolls Royce of Lanolin which we call ‘medical grade lanolin’ which is so pure it is also used by pharmaceutical companies in pharmaceutical creams.

Today Lanolin has become a relatively scarce substance as society’s demand for cheap synthetic fibers has become more popular shrinking the wool trade and making the economics of sheep farming less profitable.

We use Lanolin that comes from Australian sheep who graze freely and whose fleece are not marked with toxic paint. We do no testing on animals and are big animal lovers! Our tubes are recyclable and one day we hope to be able to provide a biodegradable tube too!

by Pontine Paus

In 2004, from the lobby of the Savoy Hotel in Milan, Pontine founded cult cosmetic product Dr.Lipp, together with the then Head of Marketing for Stella McCartney.

“I’ve been using nipple balm on my lips for years and I think more people should know about it, because its the only product I’ve come across that truly works on really dry skin!”

They giggled, and noticed more people giggled at the idea of putting nipple balm on their lips. It seemed a little crazy, and ever so slightly naughty. However, after much research, it was discovered that Lanolin was the original pillar of the cosmetic industry, but due to increasing prices and cheaper plant substitutes it had became less favourable. Yet it is still considered by dermatologists and chemists to have the most similar chemical composition to our skin’s natural oils, which in a nutshell explains why it works so well and why it’s so good for newborn babies too. So Pontine took lanolin out of the breastfeeding market and placed it into the cosmetics market, first launching in SpaceNK in October 2004. Dr. Lipp soon became a favourite among the fashion set and international celebrity make-up artists including Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath, Sharon Dowset, Sara Lindsay & Karla Powell, to name a few… Enjoy it!
