First of all, for those who may not yet be aware, what exactly is it about your facials that has proven so attention-grabbing over the years?
So the Inner Facial massage method helps to release stress and tension from the muscles, as well as stimulating the lymphatic system to remove toxins & congestion, leaving the skin clear clean and bright. The massage allows the muscles to behave more youthfully, adding more definition to contours, giving a lifted look. It also makes the muscles around the jawline and cheekbones more toned, softer and lighter. Each facial is tailor-made to include a cocktail of skincare products, as well as instruction on at-home massage techniques. It can also help with TMJ & tension headaches; it immediately gives you that face lift look with bouncy radiant skin.
What was it that inspired you to develop a technique of your own, rather than sticking with a more traditional, mainstream method?
I always want to over-deliver with treatments, and this method gave me the opportunity to give my clients the best treatment possible that was going to make a positive impact immediately, as well as at-home instruction to maintain.
It’s amazing that you began developing your techniques at only 19. What influenced you to be so certain and driven at such a young age?
My grandmother and mother were huge influences on me. We would always play with face products/oils – I watched my grandmother and mother massaging their faces. When I started to do this on myself I could feel an immediate impact on my facial muscles; it also made me feel relaxed and calm, and rebalanced my skin.
As one of the world’s most renowned beauty therapists, your client list is essentially a who’s who of the A-list. Have you ever been starstruck by a client?
I am very fortunate to work with many talented and gifted people, which is something I look forward to on each visit. I do not really get starstruck as such, but I do look forward to working with all of my clients, including the celebrities.
When you were initially starting out, did you face any opposition or resistance from people who didn’t understand your techniques?
No, I have never encountered any resistance or opposition from anyone. I think the main reason for this is the explanation and consultation I have with each client beforehand, so that they completely understand the treatment, the reasons why, the positive impact and ongoing effect.
What sort of things can you tell about a person from their skin?
You can tell lots about a person from their skin and the tension they hold in their muscle tissue. Anything from their stressful work life to their food intake/diet, emotional welfare and their general lifestyle.
Aside from facial massage, what’s a step people can add into an at-home facial to make it feel a bit more luxurious?
Masks are always a great way of adding a bit of luxury to your skincare routine, as well as taking the time to do a 5 minute facial massage with a luxury oil before bedtime.
In your opinion, what is one skincare step people most commonly get wrong?
Cleansing is a common step I find people often get wrong. From only cleansing once – which in my opinion is not thorough enough – to not removing the cleansing products efficiently enough, which can be quite detrimental to the skin, causing underlying congestion. I always advise to double cleanse in the evening and once in the morning. Make sure to remove all cleansing product residue.
What have you enjoyed most about your involvement with Beauty Papers?
Being able to have the freedom to write about beauty without any constraints, and being involved in such a dynamic magazine has been such a great experience.
Would you ever consider making editorial or publication-based work a more prominent part of what you do, or do you prefer predominantly working directly with clients?
Yes, I would. It’s certainly something I enjoy – it adds to the variety of what I do and means I can spread my knowledge further.
Given you know the ins and outs of beauty and skincare better than almost anyone, we’re dying to know… what do you think of Dr.Lipp?
I really love Dr.Lipp’s original balm. The fact that it’s 100% natural and multi-purpose means I can use it as a lip treatment at the end of my facial treatments.
You often talk about how important it is to have a skincare ritual, but do you have any other rituals in your day to day life?
Yes, I do have other rituals. This includes my beauty supplements, alkalising greens, probiotics and a cold 2 minute shower morning and evening, which is a routine and ritual I stick to daily. I also do 10 minutes of daily meditation every morning, as well as while I am working – I do 2 minutes of meditation before each client.
We absolutely love that you bring your dog to work with you as an added comfort for clients. Other than Maude, what helps you wind down at the end of a stressful day?
I have started practicing the first disciplines of tai chi – I find this really helps clear everything from my day. Another ritual which is also something I use to unwind is my nighttime skin/body care routine.
We were so excited to hear that you’ve curated your own beauty box with Feelunique! Are there any other exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?
This beauty box for Feelunique was one of the nicest projects to be involved with, and there are always other exciting thing on the horizon, including possible beauty product development.
Finally, what’s your advice to others who want to bring their own methods and individual approach to an existing field?
I always encourage facialists and massage therapists to think outside the box, and my biggest encouragement is for them to practice, practice, practice – spend time working on friends and family, study hard, research and be armed with knowledge and information.
