January, 2019

A retail expert, powerhouse in the beauty industry and CEO of the new British Beauty Council.....Millie Kendall is driving force in the UK beauty industry, and we aspire to be like her one day (if we are oh so lucky of course!)

Tell us a bit more about how you got to this point in your career.

I honestly think it was sheer luck and determination. I am an ideas generator and I like to make things happen.

What has been your best career highlight?

So many things I don’t really know where to begin, getting an MBE was definitely one of them, but opening our shop BeautyMART, working for Shu Uemura was a definite highlight for me and was the first place I ever felt at home in my career. Hanging out with Horst Rechelbacher at this home was great.

We looove British Beauty Council, can you tell us a bit more about it’s initiative and inspiration?

The council has been set up to represent the voices of the British beauty industry. We are A NEW AND INDEPENDENT NOT-FOR-PROFIT INDUSTRY BODY WHICH EXISTS TO RAISE THE PROFILE OF THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY THROUGH THREE KEY PILLARS; REPUTATION, EDUCATION AND INNOVATION. WE BELIEVE THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IS CURRENTLY UNDERSERVED. WE’RE UNDERTAKING RESEARCH TO BOTH DEFINE AND VALUE ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE UK ECONOMY!

What do you love about the British Beauty industry?

Every thing and every one. I love that you can start by sweeping the floors of a hair salon and then go on to being the next John Frieda. I love that you can start  working at the DHS and end up being the Beauty Director of British Vogue. We are a diverse employer and our industry is a creative force in the UK and abroad.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone looking to take the first step in a new business?

Be prepared to lose a lot of sleep, to work hard and to constantly reinvent yourself and brand. Being a business owner takes broad shoulders.

Do you have any tips for balancing such a busy schedule?

Be nimble and flexible at all times. Use an electronic calendar with alerts.

What beauty products can you not live without?

I could live without them all, that’s the beauty of the beauty industry, we do this because it is fun and we love it, not because we need it. And a lot of products can be made and found in nature so I can always find something there to take care of my skin.

What do you feel are the benefits of 100% natural products? What other 100% products do you use?

I don’t always use natural for make-up but I tend to opt for more natural in skincare, this is mainly because I like oils on my skin not silicone. I feel there is a better synergy.

What does ‘natural beauty’ mean to you?

There are so many names for natural, and I think the consumer gets confused but the term green beauty honestly makes me think of a shake/drink as I believe internal beauty is as important as the exterior.

Do you think it’s important for beauty products to be natural and eco-conscious?

I think it is inevitable that we use both natural and synthetic  and I think we should make products with as much sustainable resource as possible, we should always have elements of natural ingredients in our  products as these can be the best basis to create a product, but we do and will  probably always use some chemicals to stabilize or enhance performance.

"I am a huge fan of lip balm, and I think your original award winning balm is the best. No need to keep reapplying and lasts for ages."
