Behind the LOOK

September, 2019

International make-up artist to the stars and red carpet beauty queen, Maria Asadi takes us through her Clueless beauty inspired advertorial….we just loooove her!

Can you tell us about the chosen look? What was the inspiration for it?

This look was a beauty editorial I did and the theme of the shoot was the film ‘Clueless’ I was working with pink, which is one of my favourite shades as it’s so elegant and feminine. I chose to use glitter all of the eyelid and then a blush pink blended in the sockets with a pink lip, I wanted every pink tone to feel like a soft blush hue rather than anything too 80’s or pop.

What products did you use to create the look?

I used a too faced glitter glue to hold the glitter well, I used a Mac blushes as Eyeshadow called Dollymix, and I used a Mac Lipstick called Lovelorn.

Any tips for anyone at home wanting to recreate a similar makeup look?

I would say it’s a fairly simple look to achieve, if you used the lovelorn lipstick all over yourlips, dust some of the dolly mix blush on your cheeks and in the sockets of your eyes, and use a gold or rose gold glitter on the eyelid, glitter works best with the fingers rather than a brush.

What was the vibe like on set? Can you talk us through the day?

The day was really fun, it was my first day working with the Photographer Carla Guler, she’s an incredible photographer and really understood the vibe, I just kept going on and on about the film Clueless……the energy on set was really chill and also a lot of fun as pink is a colour that always makes people feel happy.

What would you say your signature beauty look is?

I don’t have a signature look, but I have a signature style, my style of work is elegant, feminine, classy, and most importantly luxurious and expensive. Make up has to look luxurious and expensive, and that doesn’t necessarily mean using expensive products, but means chosing your shades correctly, and having the make up really feel polished and beautiful with the correct choice of tones.

Do you use cruelty-free beauty products in your kit? Why?

I do use Cruelty free products in my kit, it’s ever single persons responsiblity to be mindful of what they are using and how it affects our planet.

What can we all do to be a little bit more green or ethical as a make-up artist?

I would say make sure you know where your products are made and how they are made, never waste product, and mostly just be conscious of where and how the products are made.

What would you be doing if you were not a makeup artist?

This is a really interesting question, sometimes I think about this randomly out of the blue, and I love what I do so much that the thought of thinking about doing something else gives me anxiety….I would have to say a Beauty Editor or a Stylist or a music video director, something creative and artistic for sure.

What items should everyone have in their kit?

The most essential Kit item everyone should have is a good lash curler, people don’t realise the importance of lash curling, it makes such a difference to opening up the eye, my favourite right now is the Troy Suratt one.

Who is your dream client?

My dream client is Beyonce Knowles, she has the most incredible canvas to work on, and really has fun with her make up. I’ve grown up admiring all her beauty looks.

Do you have any career highlights so far?

This changes frequently so it’s hard to answer…….eeeekkkkk

What is a day in the life like for you?

A day in my life is waking up around 7am, getting ready for work, my kit is always prepared the night before, getting to work, usually returning home at 7pm, and then straight back out again to work out, and then a home arrival of around 9pm, this does change often….depending on my schedules…..

What is the best piece of beauty advice you ever received and what is the best piece you could give?

The best price of advise I was taught by make up artist Hannah Murray backstage on her Topshop Runway show when I was on her team was ‘Don’t overthink the make up’ I would say this is the BEST advise I was ever given, once I had taken this advise on board, my entire life and the way I saw make up changed…..The thing we always do is overthink make up, when you don’t over think it and you just create, you usually create the best work!

"I have loved Dr Lipp for years, I love how intensely it hydrates the lips, I love the rich texture which stays on and you don't need to keep re-applying, and I love the gloss it gives, I use it a lot as a gloss, and it's a bonus that it has all these beautiful ingredients in."
