Dr.Lipp chats to professional MUA Selen Hurer about her gorgeous glowing skin looks, best beauty advice and so much more! We just love her!
We really loooove the Dreamingless mag look you created! Can you tell us more about the chosen look?
The fashion story behind this look was from a series called ‘The Hang Up’. Each look representing a different day and particular emotion. I didn’t want the make-up to over power. I kept it very simple and soft using inspiration from the clothing. I wanted to enhance Anna’s natural features picking up the pink tones in the cheek and lips.
What products did you use to create the look?
Anna has such beautiful skin. I didn’t want to cover her freckles. I used Voya skincare products to prep the skin. Becca Cosmetics Love Glow Elixir Serum and Iconic London Illuminator in Pink Pearl to create the dewy skin. I applied Charlottle Tilbury Beach stick in Las Salinas to the cheeks and used Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Kidman’s Kiss on the lips.
Any tips for anyone at home wanting to recreate a similar look?
The key for glowing skin is all in the skin care prep. Once the skin is properly prepped using cleanser, serum and moisturiser make-up product application becomes so much smoother and easier. You will find that you need less product too. A bad skin base causes product to stick to dry patches and lines and doesn’t sit well all day. Use illuminator sparingly on the areas of the face where the light would naturally hit like the brown bones, cheekbones and bridge of the nose.
What would you say your signature beauty look is?
I’m all about glowing skin. I’m not a fan of heavy powdered matte looks. I love to create subtle highlights in the skin to make it look fresh and healthy.
I love how diverse Dr.Lipp is, you can literally use it on any part of the face body. And the tube lasts for ages, a little goes along way.
Do you use cruelty-free beauty products in your kit?
Yes I now have a cruelty – free beauty kit. It took me a while to rebuild my kit, it seemed such a waste to get rid of my other products. The quality of cruelty – free beauty has come a really long way now and there are so many good quality products available now. There is no need to test on animals it’s just cruel.
What can we all do to be a little bit more green or ethical as a make-up artist?
Spend some time researching for clean and natural ingredients in products. Use Biodegradable face wipes – I love Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic Facial Wipes. Switch plastic cotton buds with bamboo cotton buds. Some cosmetics and skincare brands are now offering refillable products.
What would you be doing if you were not a makeup artist?
I think I would have loved to have been either a fitness instructor or yoga teacher. Or something food related as I love to cook!
What items should everyone have in their kit?
Skin and eye primers are a must. I cannot do make-up without these! And Dr. Lipp of course!!
Who is your dream client? Natasha Kaplinsky. She is a dream to work with and one of the nicest and most genuine people in the business.
Do you have any career highlights so far?
I have been very fortunate to have met and worked with so many wonderful talented people over the years on some amazing shoots. But my ultimate career highlight would have to be working on a Harry Potter movie. I’m a huge fan of the books and it was a dream come true to be able to work on it. But also one of the most challenging make-up jobs.
What is a day in the life like for you?
Not one day is ever the same! I can be working anything from 3 hours to 16 hours! Different people and different surroundings. One day I can be working on a fashion shoot another day working in a TV studio.
What is the best piece of beauty advice you ever received and what is the best piece you could give?
The best piece of advice that was given me was ‘Less is more’.
The best advice I can give is very simple always take your make-up off before you go to bed. The amount of people that have sat in my make-up chair with the previous day’s make-up horrifies me!! Your skin gets congested and you can get eyelash mites which leaves your lashes brittle and the skin dry!
