Takes us through her nature inspired SLEEK magazine editorial!
International make-up artist Poppy France is the ultimate clean beauty advocate, and we just loooove this about her! That’s why we couldn’t wait to go #BehindTheLook on her Sleek Magazine nature inspired editorial.
Can you tell us about the chosen look? What was the inspiration for it? I was spending a lot of time road tripping in nature by the sea and was deeply influenced by the symmetry of nature, the colours and new scenes. I took a lot of photographs. I wanted to link this with my life in London and my beauty work, especially as I was working more and more with natural organic products. The artist Ceren Bulbun was a major inspiration for me at the time too, the collage effects she also applies within her work were used to tie everything together and create the final images of nature and beauty as one. I have been working like this since art school, merging nature and humans within one image.
What products did you use to create the look? The ombre lip was made using varying shades of lipstick blending into one another from darkest to the lightest side being our model, Danielle’s natural skin tone. Her lips were meant to look like a flower petal.
Any tips for anyone at home wanting to recreate similar looks? Always hydrate lips first to prep them, which you can put in with the ombré lip look
It is multi functional and hydrates skin all day long!
What was the vibe like on set? Can you talk us through the day? It was creative, collaborative and fun. I narrowed down the images to plan a mood board and had a basic idea of what we were doing. Using the colours in the Dorset images, i organically created each look on Danielle. We all worked together to get the right light and we travelled to various locations following natural light and Samantha King our photographer, used some of her own lights for various images where she wanted light to bounce back.
What would you say your signature beauty look is? Skin. I am known to either leave perfectly clear skin as it is, only using a small amount of products to enhance natural beauty, or using potions and makeup, I will work to create flawless, glowing, clear and beautiful skin for anyone. I think my signature look is to enhance someones natural features, brushed brows, clear skin and subtle tricks to brighten eyes.
Do you use cruelty-free beauty products in your kit? Why? Yes. If a brand sends me something that isn’t, I will also use it, as I do not like waste. I care about the environment.
What can we all do to be a little bit more green or ethical as a make-up artist? Don’t waste what you already have. Use organic, natural products – biodegradable water wipes and cotton buds. If you do need to buy more, shop consciously, check if they are recyclable, refillable and cruelty free. You can use sites like ‘Cruelty Free Kitty’. If a beauty brand currently sells to China, they have to test on animals as this is Chinese policy, so be aware of this. Knowledge is key.
What would you be doing if you were not a makeup artist? I guess I would still be an artist of some sort, perhaps a photographer or an art director. Still, I would always tie my work in with humanity and environment.
What items should everyone have in their kit?
Clear eyebrow gel, Mascara (Kjaer Weis or Ilia), Lip balm (Dr Lipp :)), (Daniel Sandler) concealer. For an evening (Shu Umera) eyelash curlers and (Ellis Fass) budge proof eyeliners are great and fun. I am very minimal and barely wear makeup myself. Less is more but always remember to be playful with colour and have fun!
Who is your dream client? Anyone who I respect or admire.
Do you have any career highlights so far? I just got back from Tel Aviv working with Madonnas band and dancers, it was challenging and a real buzz working out how to keep makeup waterproof and sweat prof for when the dancer revealed their faces after a full performance wearing masks! The brand Finisterre have changed my life. I feel so grateful to have met them, they’ve taken me around the world and taught me about being environmentally conscious. The people who work for this brand are amazing. We use minimal everything and have our own water bottles on shoots. No single use plastic allowed.
What is a day in the life like for you?
Social, creative, high pressure and fun!
What is the best piece of beauty advice you ever received and what is the best piece you could give?
Treat your body like a plant, feed and water yourself with good stuff. Remember you are beautiful, being beautiful is being true to yourself.
