On her shoot with Coco Rocha!
Kim Brown is a beauty industry hybrid, perfectly juggling her role as Beauty Director of Glass Magazine and leading makeup artist. So it’s no surprise that we want to shine light on her work. In this feature we go behind the look and dissect one of the most striking images in Brown’s portfolio, an intimate cover shoot with supermodel Coco Rocha.
For Glass Magazine’s coveted anniversary issue, the cover had to be something extra special. Notorious for her androgynous appearance and natural ability to express a range of emotions, iconic model Coco Rocha, was the natural choice to grace the cover. Not only is Coco famously enigmatic but her bone structure is perfect for beauty editorials as makeup artist Kim Brown explains: “Those bones! I had always wanted to work with her and she seemed perfect for the shoot as we wanted to convey an iconic, timeless feel.” Collaborating with the photographer for the shoot, Jason Hetherington, they decided upon a bold colour scheme for the look which Coco was easily able to pull off. “We wanted to create a timeless image yet modern at the same time.” Taking references from iconic film stars like Angelica Houston and Elizabeth Taylor for inspiration, both of whom were not afraid of strong colour and bold shapes, Kim was able to create an artistic modern look on Coco with canary yellow eye shadow and soft red lips.
I use Dr.Lipp on almost everything from dry elbows to lips. If you mix it with moisturiser it gives you a wonderful dewy base for your foundation.
Brown found Coco amazing to work with. “The way she moves her body is incredible and she’s also very charismatic and intelligent.” Describing her makeup artistry style as “polished yet artsy” Kim loves creating beautiful makeup with a twist.
Her style ranges from natural to really strong and bold, the main goal though is always for the subject to look beautiful.
This season she’s been feeling more experimental using bright colours and glitter. “Be bold” is her motto. Don’t hold back. Go for it and take risks when it comes to creativity. Kim resonates with the quote “To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong.” Creativity is about pushing your boundaries and stepping out of your comfort zone as an artist.
She believes her years of working as a makeup artist have really helped her learn how to develop creative story concepts and put together the right teams with synergy for successful beauty shoots. Growing up with a passion for both fashion and art, Kim felt becoming a makeup artist was the best way to combine her two loves. Kim finds the people around her most inspiring. “It could be a friend, movie star, artist or someone sitting on the bus. You can find inspiration anywhere.” As a mother of three Kim finds juggling parenthood and her career a challenge. She’s learned to be more selective with the jobs she chooses to do as her time is precious.
Listing personal career highlights as working with A-list actress, Uma Thurman and shooting for Italian Vogue, Kim continues to push the envelope and live her dream. On her wish list of stars to work with is singer Debbie Harry who Kim cites as a “huge inspiration” and a risk taker with her personal makeup and style.
With Glass Magazine’s continuous avant garde beauty shoots directed by Kim, we’re ready to sit back and see what other journeys her imagination takes us on.
