On her Essence Mag shoot!
For February’s Behind The Look, we caught up with California-born and New York-residing makeup artist and groomer to the stars Janice Kinjo, for her beautiful summer shoot with Essence magazine, featuring striking metallic eyes and a big glossy smile. The perfect look to recreate at home!
Janice has worked with a whole host of mega celebs including Idris Elba *swoon*, Drake, Mary J Blige and Uzo Aduba of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. She loves working with both men and women, telling us that men are super easy and quick to work with (and she does have some super clients), but with women, there is no limit to creativity!
As well as the impeccable make-up created by Janice, we’re fans of this gorgeous shoot because of model’s Adaora Akubilo’s beautiful and warm smiling face. We just LOVE a gorgeous smile! The shoot saw Janice and Adaora working together for the first time, along with photographer Darren Keith. The creative team (including Janice’s friend and hair stylist, Cynthia Alvarez), were briefed with a focus on the brilliant eyeshadows sported by Adaora, supported with a nude lip for a fresh, summery feel, one of Janice’s signature looks.
The chosen look apparently set the vibe for the shoot too; very calm and creative! Janice gives us the low down that the Editors of Essence were super trusting and were happy to hand over creative control, with just mood boards to go by. Sounds like a dream scenario for a makeup artist if you ask us! It’s a far cry from Janice’s most challenging shoot – she reveals she once had to make-up the face of a client who was so late, she has just 15 minutes to complete the look! Even thinking about it sounds stressful!
I love that Dr.Lipp keeps your lips moisturized for so long and that its natural. It’s hard to find a balm that stays on for that long and made with natural ingredients. Also, I love to put it onto of my bronzer to give my skin a dewy glow.
We got the scoop on the eyeshadows used by Janice: a silver cream shadow (Make Up For Ever 12 Flash Color Case) applied as a base, with NYX’s Ultra Pearl Mania shadows in True Purple Pearl and Light Blue (sadly now discontinued). Want to create the look at home? Janice also shared a top tip for creating the look. “When using loose eyeshadows, always apply a cream shadow underneath for staying power. This helps hold shadows in place and also gives the colour a tone that shines through. In these photos, there is a metallic undertone because I used silver cream shadow.” Super tip!
Alongside a good cream shadow to anchor great pigments (you can also use Dr.Lipp for this), Janice recommends a good primer to hold make-up in place, oil blotting papers (she praises Petal Fresh Aburatorigami Japanese Beauty Papers), and Sephora Collection’s eyeliner for pigment and staying power. We couldn’t help but rack Janice’s beauty brain further for some stellar advice, and she revealed, “My best piece of advice is cliché but, see the beauty in yourself and others. Bring out your and their best features with makeup. If you have nice lips, wear bright colours. If you have nice brows, keep them shapely. Nice eyes? Wear a good eyeliner and mascara to make them pop.”
