First of all, how would you sell Metix to someone who’s never heard of it?

You can now identify & shop products directly from your fave influencers, and upload your own beauty creations. Our one-basket feature allows you to buy products from different retailers all in one payment within the app – making it super easy to get-the-look. Get inspiration with products you already have in your makeup bag using our ‘Search by Product’ feature.
With Metix, you can see how the same product is being applied by different celebs, bloggers & users across the app and re-create your own version. Previously it was impossible to find out what lipstick or mascara celebs were wearing at the Oscars, Coachella or LFW – now you can shop all their fabulous looks in one place, and also share your top beauty pics with other beauty enthusiasts! We love that you spotted a gap in the market and ran with it so successfully. What is your best advice when it comes to pitching a business idea?
Jamie: Believe in your concept 100%, do your research and make sure you know everything about the market you’re going into. Also make sure you talk & listen to your potential customers; if they have a great idea then allow your business to evolve. I think it’s really important to be open to adapting your product – like anything, a business must be able to develop and grow.
Do you think the dynamic of working with a sibling changes the way you function as business partners?
Jamie: Yes I think it makes us more honest and productive! We are able to make decisions a lot quicker as there is no stepping on egg shells in our office! We are brutally honest with one another and spend all day throwing around new ideas- when we find one we both love, we know to run with it!
How do you make sure you create balance and get down time?
Jamie: It’s definitely difficult to switch off when you run your own business. It’s impossible not to think about it 24/7, which I don’t think is a bad thing! You’ve got to be passionate about what you do, and willing to work really hard to get where you want to be. But when you do take a break I think it’s essential to put your phone and laptop away and watch some rubbish reality TV!!
London is such a hub for creativity, there’s always something new going on. What are your favourite things to do in the city?
Jenna: London really is the best city in the world!! We love walking around Covent Garden in the evenings. It’s great to take an hour in the evening to clear your head and refresh. You can really draw inspiration from anywhere, and the more you see the more inspiration will come. Especially now that it’s finally spring! We’re of course also partial to some great food spots in our area- Olivelli is one of our favourites! It’s a tiny Italian on Store Street with amazing authentic Italian food. It’s a real gem!
We imagine a huge portion of your job involves listening to the market. What trends do you see taking off in 2017?
Jenna: I’m seeing glossy eye shadow everywhere, less contouring and more of a dewy – almost shiny – finish to the skin. Definitely a more natural look for this summer.
Does working in business come naturally to you, or have you had to develop your instincts over time?
Jamie: We have always wanted to have our own business, so we made an effort growing up to talk to people who have done it themselves. It’s important to always listen to other people’s experiences and advice. However, I would say that it is impossible to know what it’s like to run your own business until you do it yourself! You learn something new every day, and that’s what’s so exciting about it; one day you’re marketing, the next day you’re making a strategic business decision. You learn so much in such a short amount of time.
How important do you think social media is when it comes to building a brand?
Jenna: We are so lucky to have social media, as it’s the only form of invaluable marketing that is absolutely free! We’ve put a lot into our social media, so it’s so rewarding to have 20K followers on Instagram in only three months! We are so grateful <3
Outside of work, what are your biggest passions?
Jenna: I like to make time to work out. It’s a great way to focus on something outside the business and release stress! We’re big foodies, so trying new restaurants is always on our agenda. We’ve also been travelling more for work recently, which has been really fun!
Who (or what) inspires you?
Jenna: Seeing young people like ourselves launch their own businesses, work hard and become successful is so inspiring. It takes a lot of guts to go against the grain and forge your own way by creating a brand. We’ve always been inspired by our friend Leo who also just launched his brand Pop & Suki which has been KILLING IT! We have so much respect for all young entrepreneurs. It’s true what they say; you can only really understand someone once you’ve walked in their shoes!!
Getting here can’t have been easy. How do you push through when things get tough?
Jamie: It’s important to always have your end goal in mind; remain positive even on the hard days! If having your own business were easy, everyone would do it! Sometimes when we’re having an off day we remind each other how far we have come and what we have achieved in 3 months, from being featured in Vogue, Cosmo, Elle & Glamour to collaborating with huge brands such as Burt’s Bees and Eyeko!! But there really is nothing more rewarding than receiving emails and comments from our users telling us how much they love the app! That makes it all worth it!
What has been the most rewarding moment so far?
Jenna: Being featured in Zoella’s youtube video last month was definitely a pinch-yourself moment for us!! So much has happened since we launched, and everyday there is something new to get excited about!
Aside from your own, and the obvious ones like Instagram, what are your must-have apps?
Jamie: Deliveroo! We are so busy that some days that I don’t think we’d even get around to eating if it weren’t for Deliveroo being so quick and easy!
Being digital entrepreneurs, and essentially your own bosses, do you have any rituals or routines to keep your days structured?
Jamie: We’re very disciplined. When you have your own business you have to be! But if you love what you do it isn’t hard to get up every morning! We are really grateful to be doing something we are passionate about. But a strong coffee every morning is absolutely essential!
Given that you’ve probably seen just about every beauty product under the sun by now, what do you think of Dr.Lipp?
Jenna: I’m addicted – my lips have never felt softer and I love being creative with it! I always pick my cuticles from stress, so I’ve been putting it there and it has really healed them!
Have you found any creative ways of using it?
Jenna: Someone suggested using it under my eyes for anti-aging purposes. I know I’m only 22, but I’ve become obsessed with skincare since launching Metix! As people say – it’s the one accessory along with your hair that you never take off, so it’s important to take care of it!!
Looking forward, if you could make one move in the next year with complete assurance it would succeed, what would it be?
Jamie: We are looking to expand into the US very soon which is really exciting – so watch this space!!!
