An interview with... Urska Srsen
We absolutely love Bellabeat! Can you please tell us how the company got started?
Thank you very much. I can say the same for Dr.Lipp. In 2014 when wearable and health tech was really just starting to take off, my cofounder and I realized how women have been overlooked as users and how everybody was pretty much focusing on early adopters only. We believed that tech will soon be making an impact in all wellness categories and how we can truly make something different and unique by focusing on design and a holistic approach to well-being. After raising our first seed round of $4.5M, we launched our breakthrough product, Leaf Nature. The first smart jewelry and wellness tracker designed for women. Since then, we’ve launched 3 more editions of Leaf wellness tracker, a hybrid smartwatch called Time and a smart water bottle that helps you keep track of your water intake called Spring. These past five years have been life-changing indeed.
I adore the sweet potato tint! It serves me as a multi-purpose pigment whenever I need a bit of color on my face, and it declutters my bag.
Did you feel like there was a gap in the market for your products?
There was definitely a lack in unobtrusive wearables — ones without screens and the futuristic but sporty look that has been very popular to this day. Our products have mostly been attracting women that want to monitor and improve their wellness, while not altering their style. I believe that Bellabeat plays a crucial role in connecting women that are not just early adopters with the modern approach to wellness. The existing products didn’t meet their needs, but we were able to spot the opportunity at the right time and use it to our advantage.
What has been your best career highlights so far?
I feel thrilled and proud after every product we’ve launched so far. Working on something from idea to a fully-functional product that inspires and motivate thousands of women is a truly magnificent experience. Watching my company grow with each year has been a highlight of my life!
Which beauty products can you not live without?
I’m a big fan of a natural look. I’m always on the lookout for products that enhance facial features without being too obvious. I’d choose a moisturizing lipstick that compliments my skin tone, and just a coat of volumizing mascara over anything else.
What is an average day like for you?I alternate between working at the office, going to the gym, and walking my dog. My schedule is adjusted accordingly. If Punchi (my dog) needs some time outside in the middle of working hours, I have no other choice but to comply!
What’s your best piece of advice for someone looking to take the first step in a new business or career path?
Seek knowledge from all the available resources! You’ll need to learn a lot of things fast, and it’s better if you enjoy learning since it will make it easier to keep up with the demands that others will have of you. Learning will give you confidence when presenting yourself and your business, and it will encourage you to strive to be better at what you do.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I’d tell myself to worry less and not let the stressful situations get the best of me. The mental aspect of our health is as important as physical. I feel that when people are attached to the outcome, they get more anxious and stop enjoying their work. I try to do the best I can but avoid stressing the things I can’t control. Sometimes the stakes may seem high, but in the end, your health and well-being are more important than anything.
Do you have any tips for balancing such a busy schedule?
Prioritizing and delegation are crucial for balancing a busy schedule. It may seem like every task is equally important, and that it has to be done immediately to achieve the best results. However, such a mindset leads to stress and consequently, burnout. If you prioritize your tasks and delegate what is of less importance to competent people, your schedule will be less busy, but overall productiveness will rise!
What do you do in your down time?
Sports have always been my passion, and I stay active daily by working out at the gym. I love to cook for my friends and family and try to eat homemade food as often as I can. And last but not least, spending time in nature completely recharges my energy levels, and it’s always fun to have an unplanned weekend getaway to a remote location.
Can you tell us your best beauty tips?
Hydrate, hydrate & hydrate some more. Drinking enough water makes such a big difference in skin quality and looks. I always start and end my day with a full glass of water.
What do you feel are the benefits of 100% natural products? Do you use any in your makeup routine?
I’m a big fan of 100% natural products and try to include as much as I can in my make-up routine and lifestyle in general. I’m pleased to see that companies are starting to care more about the well-being of their customers. The benefit of not having harmful substances enter your body outweighs all the pretty colors and pleasant fragrances that so many brands offer, but with the cost of toxic ingredients on the labels. I’m glad that the beauty industry is changing in a direction that is sustainable and wellness oriented. It will benefit customers, companies, and our ecosystem as well.
What is next for you?
Career-wise, we will soon launch Bellabeat+, subscription-based product that will offer its members high-quality content on the topic of wellness and fitness. As for my personal life, my next stop is a sunny seaside vacation with an endless stream of fresh fruit bowls. I want to replenish my energy and motivation while the summer lasts as the next season will bring me a lot of new and exciting challenges to work on.
What do you loooove about Dr.Lipp?
I adore the sweet potato tint! It serves me as a multi-purpose pigment whenever I need a bit of color on my face, and it declutters my bag. Seriously, if there weren’t for your lip tint, I would have at least three more products laying at the bottom of my bag, just making a mess. It’s moisturizing with a beautiful texture, so what’s there not to like?
