An interview with... Tamara Heber-Percy

Do you remember your first kiss?
Of course I do. It happened at a school disco. All I remember is that he had bright orange hair and skinny black drainpipe trousers!

How did you come up with the idea for ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’?
It began when my now-husband James took me on what was supposed to be a romantic weekend in the Lake District and checked in as Mr and Mrs Smith… It was such a disappointment though. We realised there was nothing out there to recommend stylish hotels for a weekend away for people like us. We raided friends and family for seed investment to get our first guidebook self-published in 2003. Two years later we launched the online booking service.

If you could pick anywhere, where would your dream holiday destination be?
If I could be teleported anywhere with James, I’d go for big views and isolation – somewhere like the private island of Song Saa off Cambodia’s coast.

What do you think of our Nipple Balm?
I can’t be without a tube of Dr. Lipp’s Original Nipple Balm for Lips – it’s a lifesaver on even the driest of plane journeys and stays on forever.

Where are you travelling next?

Right now, I’m hankering for one of the hotels in our collection that I haven’t been to yet: Goldeneye in Jamaica, where the Bond novels were written.

Which is your favourite city?
Hong Kong is such a buzzing and fascinating city. It’s also home to The Upper House – one of my favourite hotels, with a striking vista of the harbour.

What travel beauty essentials could you not live without?
My Elemis face cream goes everywhere with me, and I can’t be without a tube of Dr.Lipp. La Prairie Essence Caviar Eye Complex is amazing for tired eyes: I put it on under the eye mask on long-haul flights and I genuinely think my eyes are less dark on arrival as a result.
