An interview with... Danielle Collins
First of all, congratulations on your Ideal World show! It’s great to see you spreading the word about Face Yoga far and wide. Tell us, what exactly is the Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method?
The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method is a natural way of looking and feeling younger and healthier. It is a combination of face exercise, face massage, face acupressure, relaxation and wellbeing.
We looove that as well as being super relaxing, Face Yoga is also an all natural, non-invasive facelift! Can you tell us more about its benefits?
We all know the benefits of exercising, massaging and relaxing the body but so much of the time when we do this, we simply stop at the neck. My mission is to spread the message, ‘don’t stop at the neck!’. Face Yoga helps to boost the collagen and elastin in the face which plumps and firms the skin, as well as boosting circulation which encourages removal of toxins and helps to bring fresh nutrients and oxygen to the skin. This brightens the skin and helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles. Face yoga will also strengthen and relax the face muscles therefore tightening and smoothing the skin attached to the muscles.
Dr Lipp works better than any other lip product I’ve tried.
Going back to before Face Yoga, how did you first get into the natural wellness industry?
I used to be someone who was stressed and unhealthy. Just after I left university I was diagnosed with M.E, an illness which affects the immune system and nervous system. I was house bound and bed ridden for much of the time. Doctors told me that there was no cure for the illness and some people may live with it for ever. I was determined to overcome the illness and started researching and using yoga, relaxation, nutrition and positive thinking. Within 2 years I had completely overcome the illness and had such a strong desire to help others in the way I had helped myself.
You’ve taught your method to fellow Go Natural interviewee Louise Redknapp, Anne Robinson and even the TOWIE cast. What has been your most exciting experience so far?
I am lucky as I love every minute of what I do so everything is super exciting, and to be honest, never feels like work! One of the moments which really blew me away was when one of our teachers of The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method who lives in India (we train people to be qualified Face Yoga teachers) got together 1661 people and broke the Guinness world record for the largest ever Face Yoga class. It was amazing for me to see so many people using techniques I had created.
Do you ever get strange reactions when you first tell people about Face Yoga?
Sometimes! Mostly when people have never heard of it but people are always so interested to know what it is! When I explain that it’s simply massaging, exercising and relaxing the face, people often say ‘that makes so much sense’, or ‘why have I never thought of that?’. The most common thing people who are in to fitness say is, ‘no wonder my body and face don’t match, I work hard on my body but forget my face’. It’s amazing to see people have that ‘lightbulb’ moment when they get what Face Yoga is and why it’s so good!
We must admit, we’ve stuffed ourselves with mince pies during the Christmas break. Can you share some quick tips for regaining radiant skin this January?
Firstly it’s doing the stuff we all know but often don’t do enough like drinking loads of water, reducing sugar and sleeping well. Never underestimate the power of water, clean eating and sleep! But for a bit of extra help try gently pinching the cheek area for 30 seconds each day using the thumb and 2 fingers to boost the collagen in the face. Then, each morning gently tap around the eye area with your index finger to prevent puffiness and dark circles.
If there ever were a fabulous testament to how well your method works, it absolutely has to be you! How often do you practice your ‘10 Minute Natural Facelift’ ?
Everyday. What I aim to do daily is the 10 minute upper face workout and the 10 minute lower face workout from my DVD or App and if possibly some of the extra acupressure and massage sections. But like all of us there are days I don’t have the time to do all of that so I just pick a few minutes of techniques, according to what my skin needs that day and practice those. My advice to everyone with Face Yoga is that anything is better than nothing and as long as you are doing some techniques every day, you will see results.
Your daughters are adorable. Do you see them following in your footsteps?
Thank you! I don’t mind if they decide to work in the wellness industry like me or not but what I hope is that they follow in my footsteps in terms of living their dream, following their passion and loving what they choose to do in life. My husband and I aim to give them as many experiences and opportunities so they can discover what they really love, and then help them to reach their full potential in whatever they choose.
What are your daughters called and how old are they?
Lucia is 4 and she is very grown up for her age!! She is in to everything, so enthusiastic and loves chatting all day! Lilia is 6 months and is an absolute sweetheart. She is very smiley and laughs lots! I am so blessed to have two such lovely girls.
How long do we need to practice Face Yoga before we can see results?
It varies from person to person as we all have different skin types, different lifestyles and are different ages. But everyone that practices Face Yoga regularly sees results. Some people notice a difference immediately, others within a week or two and for others it takes a few months. But just like exercising, massaging and relaxing the body, if you regularly do this for the face, you will always look and feel better.
What are a few key Face Yoga exercises we can do at home?
- The ‘V’: to reduce lines and wrinkles around the eyes and to make the eyes more open and energized. Put both your middle fingers together between your eyebrows then apply pressure to the outer corners of your eyes with your index fingers. Look up and start to move the lower eyelids upwards, making a strong squint. Then relax and repeat 6 more times. To finish squeeze your eyes shut for 10 seconds then relax.
Smile Smoother: to reduce lines around the mouth and to lift and firm the cheeks and jaw. Hide your teeth with your lips and make an ‘O’ shape with the mouth. Then, smile as wide as you can and keep hiding the teeth. Repeat 6 times. Next, hold the smile shape and place one index finger on the chin. Then start to move your jaw up and down as you tilt your head back. Relax and repeat twice more.
- Giraffe: to tone and lift the neck area. Looking straight ahead place your finger tips on the top of your neck and lightly stroke the skin down as you tilt your head back. Bring your head back down and repeat twice more. Then jut your lower lip out as far as possible, place your fingers on your collarbone and point your chin upwards, pulling the corners of your mouth down. Hold for 4 deep breaths.
You recently said “Dr Lipp works better than any other lip product I’ve tried”. Thank you! How do you use your Dr.Lipp?
I use it a couple of times a day on my lips and it’s great as an eyebrow tamer as well. I swore by 100% lanolin as a moisturising and protective barrier nipple cream when I was breast feeding my two daughters, so I loved it when I found a product is the exact same ingredient but for lips!
Lastly, our skin absolutely glows when we use your Danielle Collins Pro Lift Facial Moisturising Serum! Why do you think using natural products to look after our skin is so important?
Our skin is our biggest organ and 60 % of what we put on our skin is absorbed in to our blood stream, so using natural products just makes sense for our health. Plus natural products work better as our skin is a living organ and – just like any other organ – responds best to pure, natural ingredients and often reacts negatively to chemicals.
So many products out there, even ones at the top end of the price points, are full of water and chemicals (just look at the ingredients on your moisturiser and it usually says Aqua followed by lots of long chemical names), but myself and my skincare specialist who made the serum wanted to make a moisturising serum which was only full of pro active ingredients, no fillers or water and each of these active ingredients helped to feed the skin and have short term and long term results. The main ingredients are rosehip oil, green tea extract, evening primrose oil, apricot kernel oil and carrot oil. These are all high in vitamins, minerals, anti oxidants and essential fatty acids. I am yet to meet someone who tries it who ever goes back to their old facial moisturiser.
