The fantastic British Formulation Scientist & Beauty Futurologist

Colin is a formulation scientist, inventor, beauty blogger, and beauty futurologist - and he took time out of being all those things to tell us some facts about our star ingredient, lanolin!

When life first moved out of the ocean onto land it had to overcome some serious new problems, one of which was drying out.
Another was staying warm in the new harsh environment. The mammals’ solution was hair. To protect the hair and the skin underneath it from dehydration, mammals, including humans, produce an oily material that lubricates and protects from many external threats.  It also regulates the moisture content.  In humans it is known as sebum.  Sheep produce their own version, and this is the source of the material we know as lanolin.

Lanolin is a remarkable material in many ways, and is quite unlike any synthetic material.
Attempts by chemists to mimic it have routinely failed.  It is able to act as a barrier to water loss when it is dry, and in wet conditions it acts as a barrier to water absorption.  It also acts to hold water in the skin, so is a very effective moisturiser.

No man-made material comes close to behaving this way.
For example petroleum jelly, which is often used for similar purposes to lanolin in skin care, simply repels water.  Petroleum jelly certainly does act as a moisturiser, but it does so by totally sealing the skin.

Instead of simply sitting on top of the skin like petroleum jelly, Lanolin penetrates to just below the skin’s surface, where the skin has the strongest barrier function.

Lanolin is the material that is most similar to the chemical composition of the skin’s natural oils.

Modern medicine has recognised the properties of lanolin.
Damaged nipples from lactation have been treated with lanolin; a study in Brazil measured the size of wounds and found that they were smaller on nipples treated with lanolin. As a result the National Health Service in the UK recommends breastfeeding women to use Lanolin for treating sore or cracked nipples.

Dr.Lipp is the ultimate ‘free from’ product.
It is derived directly from sheep with no need to add anything at all – it is simply purified.   It has no need for preservatives, colours, anti-oxidants or plasticisers.  It is 100% natural in every sense of the word.  On top of that, as the lanolin is extracted from wool after shearing it involves no cruelty of any kind to the sheep.

Lanolin is a unique material in many ways.
There are no ingredients used in cosmetics that are more natural than lanolin.  Being produced in the sebaceous glands of the sheep’s skin to coat their wool, it is hard to think of a more natural product, and it is one that involves no cruelty to produce.

It is a totally natural material, and one that is endorsed by science and medicine.
It is a simple product, with a long history of use, yet new uses and applications are still being found today.  It is sustainable, carbon neutral and completely biodegradable long before those terms were even coined.”
